Prerequisites for pla straws to be degradable

Aug 17, 2021

Compared with plastic straws, pla straws can not only be recycled and reused, but also can be completely degraded after use to reduce excessive environmental pollution problems. After technical improvement, pla straws use food contact paper as the main material, and of course the safety of the product It has also been greatly improved, and it can fully meet the requirements of the corresponding hygiene indicators. PLA materials are widely evaluated in that way: it may be the most idealized environmentally friendly degradable material that can be seen on the market now, and the more common use is as a 3D printing material. After the global wave of plastic reduction has been set off, China has successively resorted to more and more stringent "plastic restriction orders". PLA is increasingly used in daily consumption to replace traditional petroleum-based plastic products.

Among the fully biodegradable plastics, PLA and PBAT have attracted much attention, and their use range is relatively wide. But each of them will have fatal shortcomings. PLA is too brittle, production and processing are abnormal, and it is easy to crack. PBAT is too soft, the tensile strength is too low, and the rigidity is too low. As a straw, the sealing film cannot be broken.

PLA straws are more suitable for warm and cold drinks, with a temperature resistance of -10°C to 50°C. The milk tea or refreshing coffee for warming hands in winter should be much higher than 50℃. PLA straws are not suitable for such products.

If the PLA straw provided by the milk tea shop can be used for any type of drink in the store, then the straw product is completely "added", and some even add non-degradable materials to ensure that the PLA straw can withstand high temperatures and not soften Deformed.

The biodegradability of PLA is not unconditional. PLA degrades quickly in a high-temperature environment with abundant microorganisms. If PLA is buried deep in the soil, there will be signs of degradation within 6 months until it returns to nature.

However, it takes longer to achieve degradation at room temperature. This is still a product for PLA raw materials. If other chemical substances are added to PLA in order to improve its temperature resistance and other characteristics, it is often more difficult to degrade, and even some of the additives are non-degradable materials, which is very different from the original intention of environmental protection.
